Part D

How drug coverage works

Medicare drug coverage, called Part D, helps pay for prescriptions. You can get it through a stand-alone drug plan alongside Original Medicare, or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes it.

Each plan has its own list of covered drugs. The fairest comparison uses your actual medications and your actual pharmacy, not the premium on its own.

A plan with a low premium and the wrong drug list can cost more across a year than a plan with a higher premium.

If you go 63 days or more in a row without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable drug coverage after your first window ends, you may owe a late enrollment penalty.
